KAYA Side Shelf

The shelf fixes firmly to the side of the table for steady, daily use, and it does not wobble once fitted. Handle cut-outs let your child lift the whole shelf off and carry their supplies to another spot, then clip it back when they are done.

The side shelf is a slim wooden trough that fixes to the edge of a KAYA table and holds pencils, stampers, brushes and glue. A built-in cup keeps pens and brushes standing upright, so the desktop stays clear for drawing and writing.

It is made from a single piece of 18 mm rubberwood with sanded edges and no sharp corners, finished in a clear, non-toxic varnish that is free of BPA and lead. Because it fixes to the table, it stays put during use, so there is little for a child to knock loose.

It works for children from around one to five, in step with the KAYA tables it fits. Younger children reach their pens without leaning across the desktop, while older ones use it to keep craft projects sorted. There are no small loose parts once it is fitted.

Rubberwood is dense and hard-wearing, so the shelf keeps its shape and does not give off the smell that thinner materials can. At 18 mm thick it resists knocks and bending, holding up to years of pencils, brushes and the odd spill without cracking.

Lift it off using the handle cut-outs, tip out any shavings or crumbs, then wipe it with a soft, damp cloth and dry it. Glue and paint come away more easily if you deal with them early. Avoid soaking the wood or using harsh cleaners on the varnish.

If your child draws and crafts often, it frees up the tabletop and cuts down on pens rolling onto the floor. Everything has a spot, so tidying up is quicker and the table is ready for the next session. It is a small addition that keeps a busy desk in order.
